Victoza is a once-daily injectable GLP-1 receptor agonist for adults and children ≥10 years with type 2 diabetes, used to lower blood sugar alongside diet and exercise. It also lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with type 2 diabetes who already have heart disease. It is not insulin and is not approved as a weight-loss medication (the same drug at higher doses is sold as Saxenda for weight loss).
Key Benefits of Victoza Insuline
How It Works
- Liraglutide is a long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist (it is not insulin, despite the “insulin pen” label sometimes used).
- Stimulates glucose-dependent insulin release from pancreatic beta-cells.
- Suppresses inappropriate glucagon secretion, slows gastric emptying, and increases satiety.
Dosage, Uses & Possible Side Effects
Dosage & Administration:
- Initial dose: 0.6mg subcutaneously once daily for 1 week (to reduce GI side effects).
- Then increase to 1.2mg once daily; if more glycaemic control is needed, may increase to 1.8mg once daily.
- Inject once daily, at any time of day, independent of meals.
- Inject into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm; rotate sites to avoid lipohypertrophy.
Uses:
- Adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control in adults and children ≥10 years with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
- Reduction of major adverse cardiovascular events (CV death, non-fatal MI, non-fatal stroke) in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.
Possible Side Effects:
- Common: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, decreased appetite, headache, injection site reactions.
- Serious: pancreatitis, gallbladder disease (cholelithiasis, cholecystitis), acute kidney injury (often from dehydration), hypoglycaemia (when combined with sulfonylureas or insulin).
- Boxed warning: risk of thyroid C-cell tumours (seen in rodents); contraindicated in patients with personal/family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2.
