Description
Victoza (Liraglutide)

Victoza is a once-daily injection that helps adults and children aged 10 and above manage blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist and also lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with type 2 diabetes and existing heart disease. It is not a weight-loss drug and must never be used for type 1 diabetes.

Key Benefits of Victoza

Proven reduction in HbA1c and fasting blood sugar.

Cardiovascular risk reduction in high-risk type 2 diabetic adults.

Low risk of hypoglycemia when used alone.

How It Works

  • Liraglutide is a long-acting human GLP-1 receptor agonist (97% homology with native GLP-1).
  • Stimulates glucose-dependent insulin release from pancreatic beta cells.
  • Suppresses inappropriate glucagon secretion and slows gastric emptying.
  • Reduces appetite and improves postprandial glucose control.

Dosage, Uses & Possible Side Effects

Dosage & Administration:

  • Start 0.6mg subcutaneously once daily for 1 week (to reduce GI symptoms; not for glycemic control).
  • Increase to 1.2mg once daily after 1 week.
  • Increase to a maximum of 1.8mg once daily if further control is needed.
  • Inject into abdomen, thigh, or upper arm at any time of day; rotate sites.

Uses:

  • Adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults and pediatric patients ≥10 years with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Reduces the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (cardiovascular death, non-fatal MI, non-fatal stroke) in adults with T2D and established cardiovascular disease.
  • Not indicated for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Should not be combined with other GLP-1 receptor agonists or liraglutide-containing products.

Possible Side Effects:

  • Common: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, injection site reactions.
  • Serious: pancreatitis, hypoglycemia (with sulfonylureas/insulin), gallbladder disease.
  • Boxed Warning: risk of thyroid C-cell tumors (contraindicated in personal/family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2).
