Xarelto 10mg is a once-daily oral blood thinner that blocks factor Xa to help prevent dangerous clots. The 10mg dose is mainly used to prevent blood clots after hip or knee replacement surgery, and to prevent recurrence after a DVT or PE has already been treated. The 10mg tablet can be taken with or without food, and routine INR blood tests are not needed.

How It Works
- Rivaroxaban is a direct, selective, oral inhibitor of factor Xa.
- Factor Xa converts prothrombin to thrombin in the coagulation cascade.

Dosage, Uses & Possible Side Effects
Dosage & Administration:
- VTE prophylaxis after hip replacement: 10mg once daily for 5 weeks, starting 6–10 hours postoperatively.
- VTE prophylaxis after knee replacement: 10mg once daily for 2 weeks.
- Extended VTE prevention: 10mg once daily after at least 6 months of treatment with a higher therapeutic dose.
- 10mg can be taken with or without food.
Uses:
- Prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in adults after elective hip or knee replacement surgery.
- Extended treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) to prevent recurrence after at least 6 months of standard therapy.
- Reduction of cardiovascular risk in chronic coronary artery disease or peripheral artery disease, in combination with low-dose aspirin (2.5mg dose; 10mg not used here).
Possible Side Effects:
- Common: bleeding (nosebleed, gum bleeding, bruising, heavy menstruation), anaemia, nausea.
- Serious: major bleeding (gastrointestinal, intracranial), spinal/epidural haematoma with neuraxial procedures.
- Boxed warnings: premature discontinuation increases thrombotic risk; risk of spinal/epidural haematoma in patients undergoing neuraxial anaesthesia or spinal puncture.
