Victoza is a once-daily injectable GLP-1 receptor agonist for adults and children ≥10 years with type 2 diabetes, used to lower blood sugar alongside diet and exercise. It also lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with type 2 diabetes who already have heart disease. It is not insulin and is not approved as a weight-loss medication (the same drug at higher doses is sold as Saxenda for weight loss).

How It Works

- Adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control in adults and children ≥10 years with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
- Reduction of major adverse cardiovascular events (CV death, non-fatal MI, non-fatal stroke) in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.
Possible Side Effects:
- Common: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, decreased appetite, headache, injection site reactions.
- Serious: pancreatitis, gallbladder disease (cholelithiasis, cholecystitis), acute kidney injury (often from dehydration), hypoglycaemia (when combined with sulfonylureas or insulin).
- Boxed warning: risk of thyroid C-cell tumours (seen in rodents); contraindicated in patients with personal/family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2.
